In the presence of Didier Roth-Bettoni
Derek Jarman, 1987, UK/West Germany
DCP, Color, English with French subs, 92'
Derek Jarman appears in the first images of The Last of England, leafing through the herbarium of a world sentenced to disaster.. That’s what he films in this both poetic and political trance of images and sounds. He denounces the Thatcher ultra-liberalism, the dumbing down of medias, the atomic threat, the refugee crisis, the environmental destruction (already!), etc...Shot in Super 8, using colored filters, vivid juxtapositions of family films and anachronisms, The Last of England offers a striking and terrible portrait of a time and world.
